I woke up this morning to find a small spider had built a web in the sink of my master bathroom. Apparently I travel too much.
I’m not a big fan of spiders in my sink, so I turned the water on and flushed her down. I had to do it three times, because each time I would come back only to see her climbing back out of the drain. “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” indeed.
I didn’t have the heart to try a fourth time. Her will and determination made too big of an impression. Plus, I’m not sure it would have done any good since this was one plucky bug. Never underestimate the single-minded will of a species that’s known for eating its mate.
So, I did what I thought was the right thing; I caught her in a glass and released her into the bushes outside my house where she would have a better chance of finding food.
After watching all this, I’m ashamed to admit how many times I’ve taken “no” for an answer, even in matters that were critically important. Looking back, many of those times I would have been successful if only I’d shown the same level of determination as a creature a hundred times smaller than me. Ouch.
What have you given up too easily on?
